And then add Covid to the mix. WOW, managing kids’ behaviors just got a whole lot more complicated.
We’re left wondering how to deal with — let alone prevent — outbursts, violence, or chatty kiddos because, unfortunately, a lot of our college training is theoretical.
Why did nobody teach us the super practical stuff like what to do when your kids keep eating their pencils or licking the walls?
Or how to manage that parent who has absolutely no faith in you and doesn’t trust you to teach their child because it’s your first year (and you’re younger than they are… been there).
Not only did it feel like I was just trying to survive those first few years, but I secretly feared that that parent was right — what if I really was failing my students daily?
What if my best isn’t good enough after all?
I spent a lot of my time after school alone after my students left, crying. I didn’t know how to turn things around or how to manage it all.
By now, you probably know that managing a classroom (especially as a new teacher) is a super steep learning curve.
And even though, when you ask for help, you’re met with the words, “It’s just the way it is for a few years (or five)” or “You are smart, you’ll figure it out”.

After a few overwhelming years of teaching elementary school, I wrote and published The Beginning Teacher’s Handbook for Elementary School as the culminating project for my M.Ed (which has since blossomed into my signature program, R.E.A.D.Y. for School Academy), and I traveled across the country sharing what I’d learned with thousands of new teachers at conferences.
I figured out how to run an engaging classroom where reading specialists and other teachers felt bad asking kids to come out for specialized classes because they were having so much fun learning in my room…. and I learned how to lesson plan — all within my contracted hours.
First, I got my personal life back (spending time with my family and freedom to play, hike, and go on mini adventures on weekends is my happy place).
Second, I realized that as much as I always loved my students, teaching gets really fun once you figure out classroom management and truly empower your students to help you run your classroom.
