Show Notes:

Classroom auctions were one of my favorite ways to reward students for choosing to be responsible citizens in my classroom, and they are also a wonderful way to establish and maintain daily contact with parents.

A couple of weeks ago when we talked all about classroom management in Episode #92: Classroom Management 101: 5 Secrets Nobody Tells You in University, I talked about the importance of changing things up and not always relying on the same techniques and classroom management strategies for every month of the school year.

Also, we talked about the importance of YOU being super excited about whatever strategy you want to use in your classroom, because if you aren’t excited about it, your students won’t buy into it, either.

So, class auctions came about for me one year when I needed a fresh strategy for my classroom management when we all came back to school in January.

That’s why I decided this would be the perfect time to share this strategy with you. It's one of of the few times in the school year when you have a bit of time over the winter break to plan for something new, and so you can come back with something special to do with your students in the New Year if this idea appeals to you! 😊

Inside this episode, you will learn:

  • How often I recommend you hold class auctions in your classroom and exactly how auctions work in tandem with Home Communication Books.

  • How to set yourself up for success in building relationships with the parents of your students from the beginning of the year so you have them on your side all year long.

  • How I used "Scholar Dollars" in my classroom to teach students about responsibility and as an effective classroom management tool.

  • Which items to include in your class auction and strategies for getting items so you aren't spending a fortune on items for students to bid on.

  • My strategy for ensuring that every child got something they really wanted when it came to bidding on items in our auction.

  • What my 3 simple rules were for maintaining safety throughout the auction.
  • How I organized 3 parent volunteers to help make the magic happen so it was a positive experience for everyone involved!

I hope you enjoy this episode where I dish on all the goodness about this simple and effective classroom management strategy so you can hold auctions in your classroom - all while developing fantastic relationships with the parents of the students you teach!

Have a wonderful week and remember: just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
