How Teachers Can Purposely Help Develop Kids’ Career Interests

Show Notes:

Children are asked all the time, what do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a fun question to ask, but how often are kids actually educated on all of their career options?

Like so many of you, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher from a young age. A big reason for that was because I was emulating my father, who was one of my biggest role models. While teaching remains one of the most important professions in the world, now there are jobs that didn’t even exist when I was a child!

Imagine if we could plant seeds for our students outside of what is familiar and comfortable to them.  As a teacher, you have the power to help your students realize all the possibilities when it comes to choosing a career, many of which aren’t traditionally taught at home or in the classroom.

I really do believe that helping children to become more intentional about what kinds of careers might be the best choice for them can make a dramatic difference in terms of their overall happiness. Our special guest today, Holly Sharp, helps kids discover career options and interests so they can grow into happy adults! She’s talking to us about how all of you heart-centered teachers can purposely help develop your students' career interests without feeling like it’s adding more work and stress to your day.

Holly Sharp helps parents overcome the stress of finding the right hobbies and interests for their kids. She helps teachers approach this topic with greater purpose in the classroom. Her book, Dream It & Do It presents kids with 100 different careers and modern day role models. Holly’s book received the prestigious Gold Mom’s Choice Award, 5 out of 5 star review from Readers Choice and Midwest Book Review, and first place for Royal Dragon Fly short stories.

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • How to assess a child’s career personality.
  • Specific ways we can expose children to a wider range of career options, especially in elementary school.
  • Why it’s so important to get parents involved in the conversation.
  • Tips on how parents and teachers could expose children to different types of role models in various careers.
