Show Notes:
What if the most powerful academic shift you could make during your day wasn’t a new curriculum, but a change of scenery? Step outside, and something shifts instantly. Energy softens, curiosity rises, and even your most restless students seem more regulated. The outdoors naturally invites movement, wonder, and engagement - three things classrooms are constantly trying to create within four walls. But here’s the hesitation many teachers feel: Won’t I lose control?
Trust me, I felt the same way. What changed everything was realizing that taking academics outside doesn’t mean sacrificing structure. In fact, it requires it. Being outdoors demands clear expectations, strong boundaries, and a focused learning target. When students know exactly what’s expected of them, the environment becomes an asset rather than a distraction. In today’s episode, I’m sharing how to successfully take classroom learning outside to channel spring energy, without losing control, through practical outdoor management strategies.
Taking learning outside isn’t about losing control; it’s about redefining it. When teachers treat the outdoors as simply another classroom space and intentionally reinforce expectations, it becomes both engaging and manageable. Today, I walk through ten specific strategies to help you do just that, along with the many benefits outdoor learning can have on classroom community, student behavior, and engagement. It can even become a powerful and easy reward for your students.
Often, it’s the fear of no rules, unclear expectations, or too much freedom that keeps teachers inside. But expanding your classroom walls isn’t about giving up control. It’s about adapting your systems to fit a new space. Nature amplifies learning when structure anchors it. When you pair fresh air with clear expectations, defined boundaries, and practiced routines, you create an environment that feels both energizing and controlled.
I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
