Show Notes:

Let’s be honest. The beginning of the year is a whirlwind! I know how crazy busy you are right now. As a teacher, I always felt a little frantic at the beginning of a new school year. No matter how well prepared I thought I was, my mind was always racing and thinking, what am I forgetting? If you're also feeling that way, It's completely natural.

You're probably even having those new teacher nightmares right now. You know the ones I’m talking about - where you wake up in the middle of the night and realize ten things that you still have to do before the first day. If you’re anything like me, you may even have a little notepad beside your bed where you can jot things down to get it out of your head and go back to sleep. There's so much to remember!

When you are a veteran teacher, you will likely have endless resources piled up and ready to be pulled out at the beginning of each year, which will make things so much easier. However, that’s not the case as a first (or even second or third) year teacher. I promise you will get there one day! But for now, I’m opening my virtual filing cabinet for you so that your start to the year can be a little less stressful.

Today, I’m sharing my seven favorite tips to set yourself up for success at the beginning of the year. I’m covering details that you may not have even thought to consider, because hello...how could you?! These tips will save you time and energy not only in August and September, but throughout the entire year!

Just remember, if you're feeling that sense of extreme overwhelm right now, it's totally normal. You're not alone, and it will get easier once you start the school year and get into a routine. But until you actually get started, it just feels like there's so much you need to do. So take a deep breath, my friend. You’ve got this!

Inside this week's show, you'll learn:

  • Fun and purposeful ways to start the day off smoothly.
  • What to consider when it comes to creating a positive classroom environment (clip charts aren’t the answer!).
  • How to use a mystery motivator as a way to practice routines and expectations.
  • Ideas for attention grabbers, fast finishers, and movement breaks.
  • Why prepping for birthdays before school begins and investing in newsletter templates will save you loads of time.

I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
