Show Notes:
Imagine this: you’re in the middle of explaining an important concept, and before you can even finish your sentence, three voices pop up at once, blurting out answers, side comments, or jokes. Suddenly, the flow of your lesson is gone, attention is scattered, and frustration creeps in. Blurting might seem like a small annoyance, but left unchecked, it steals valuable learning time and creates chaos.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Blurting is a common challenge in elementary classrooms, and it can derail your lessons in an instant. The good news? With a few intentional strategies, you can put an end to blurting, without yelling or losing your patience. In today’s episode, I’m sharing three simple, practical, and ready-to-use strategies to stop blurting and turn those interruptions into focused, respectful participation.
After years of letting interruptions disrupt my teaching, I realized that blurting wasn’t usually about disrespect. It was about impulse control. With that mindset shift, I began approaching blurting as a skill gap my students needed help with. I’ll walk you through three strategies to teach, model, and practice with your students so they can build this skill successfully. I’ll also highlight why consistency and positivity are essential for making these strategies stick and reducing blurting throughout the day.
Ending blurting doesn’t happen overnight, but with clear expectations, creative approaches, and positive reinforcement, you can build a classroom culture where every voice is heard at the right time. By teaching students what respectful participation looks like, and holding them accountable, you’ll not only reclaim valuable teaching minutes, but also give your students the structure they need to thrive.
Inside this week's show, you'll learn:
I hope this information is helpful as you prepare for your first, second, or third year of teaching. Until next time, remember, just because you're a beginning elementary teacher, there's no need for you to struggle like one.
